The journalism team coached by Rachel Nelson won the overall journalism award. In News Writing, junior Emilee Hall won first place and soph. Katelynne Ottmo, third. Soph. Elizabeth Vetter also competed in the event. In Feature Writing, Honey Grove swept the top three awards: Emilee Hall won first again; senior Kayce Owen, second; and Katelynne Ottmo, third again. Unfortunately, the three writers in Editorial Writing (junior Ashlee Foster, Katelynne Ottmo, and Elizabeth Vetter) did not place. In Headline Writing, senior Caitlin Warren received fourth place, and junior Rachel Yarbrough, fifth. Katelynne Ottmo was the third competitor but did not place. In the pilot contest Copy Editing, Emilee Hall won first again, fresh. Soleil Landreth claimed second, and Katelynne Ottmo received another bronze medal.
In the math events coached by Ruth Ann Jones, the Number Sense team won first place. Junior Drew Cunningham finished second; soph. Ty Lewis, fourth; junior Ethan Price, sixth; and fresh. Susana Krahn completed the team. The Calculator Applications team also won first place. Junior Ashlee Foster led the pack in first place; senior Margarita Coronado, third; junior Jesus Coronado, fifth; and soph. Reagan Smith completed the team. Fresh. Soleil Landreth brought home a fifth place medal in the Mathematics event. Ty Lewis and Susana Krahn were the other two members, helping earn third place team.
The Literary Criticism team coached by Tammy Whitlock (UIL Coordinator) and Pam Lochridge also won first place team. Senior Caitlin Warren finished in third place; senior Page Patrick, fourth; senior Kailee Frost, fifth; and fresh. Laura Bell completed the team.
In speaking events, coached by Tammy Whitlock, junior Preston Clemons earned the gold medal in Informative Speaking. Junior Ashlee Foster won first place in Persuasive Speaking; junior Jesus Coronado, second; and senior Marshall Clem, fourth. Junior Walter Skidmore also competed in Poetry Interpretation, coached by Pam Lochridge.
In Spelling and Vocabulary, coached by Pam Lochridge, fresh. Soleil Landreth finished in third place, and senior Cheyenne Skidmore received fifth. Junior Walter Skidmore and senior Melanie Boyle completed the team.
Junior Preston Clemons also brought home the gold medal in Ready Writing, coached by Tammy Whitlock. Senior Kayce Owen and fresh. Laura Bell also competed in ready writing.
Junior Amaleigh Baleigh won third place in Current Issues and Events, coached by Jon Banker. Other members were soph. Kyle Curtis, Miguel Coronado, and Calvin Corbett. As a team, they received third place.
Students who competed in Social Studies, coached by Jon Banker, were soph. Calvin Corbett and Myles Knudsen, and juniors Amaleigh Baleigh and Drew Cunningham. They finished as third place team.
Students who competed in Science, coached by Melissa Caldwell, were soph. Myles Knudsen and Miguel Coronado, and juniors Drew Cunningham, Amaleigh Baleigh, and Ethan Price.
In March, the one act play cast and crew, directed by Pam Lochridge, competed at district and finished as alternate play with their performance of "What I Did Last Summer" by A.R. Gurney. Junior Ashlee Foster was awarded Best Actress at district, and junior Rylee Stoltenberg received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast, adding points to the academic total. Other cast and crew members were seniors Alexis Wilkison, Margarita Coronado, and Melanie Boyle; juniors Amaleigh Bailey, Drew Cunningham, and Rachel Yarbrough; soph. Katelynne Ottmo; and fresh. Aaron Nelson.
Adding additional points to the academic total, Cross Examination Debate, coached by Tammy Whitlock and Pam Lochridge, was held in February. Senior Jayden Galloway and junior Ashlee Foster won first place in district and advanced to state. Senior Margarita Coronado and junior Jesus Coronado won fourth place in district. Juniors Ethan Price and Drew Cunningham also competed in debate this year.
