Honey Grove ISD Vision and Mission Statements:
The vision of the Honey Grove Independent School District’s ESL program is to cultivate learners to achieve language proficiency, demonstrate academic success, and develop leadership skills.
Our mission is to transform language instruction to ensure that we support and meet the linguistic and social needs of every emergent bilingual student at Honey Grove ISD.
ESL Programs Offered at HGISD:
The programs offered at Honey Grove ISD are ESL content based and ESL pull out.
In our ESL Content-Based program, EB students are provided English language instruction by an ESL certified teacher(s) in all content areas that are integrated with the academic content such as RLA, math, science, or social studies.
In our Pull-Out ESL program, an ESL certified teacher pushes into the English language arts and reading classroom or pulls EB students out to teach ELAR.
Goals of ESL Programs:
- To ensure EBs develop comprehensive skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English.
- To empower EB students to master grade level content while acquiring English.
- To enable EBs to integrate and succeed in the mainstream school program.
Policies and Procedures:
- Identification - Upon registering for school, parents will complete a Home Language Survey which identifies potential EB students. If the HLS indicates any language other than English, PreLAS or LASlinks will be administered to identify the student. Students who are identified as EB are eligible for our ESL program.
- LPAC (Language Proficiency Assessment Committee) - The LPAC manages the identification and placement of new EBs. In addition they meet on all EBs for annual reviews and/or reclassification. The LPAC also recommends accommodations for state tests (STAAR & TELPAS). Lastly, they monitor reclassified students for 2 years.
- Instruction - HGISD offers both content based and pull out ESL instruction.
- Assessment - All EBs take TELPAS annually and STAAR as appropriate.
- Program Design - ESL programs are essential components of the regular school program.
